Mohammad Babaei will be co-leading the Global Mining Guidelines Group’s artificial intelligence working group.

Babaei, Teck Resources’ digital mining innovation lead, will be sharing the helm with Mark O’Brien, CITIC Pacific Mining’s manager of digital transformation, GMG said on Thursday.

Babaei currently oversees digital innovation projects at Teck that boost productivity, sustainability and safety. He has led mining and maintenance machine learning projects, and is in the process of developing a real-time diggability solution.

He said in a statement that he was looking forward to collaborating and sharing knowledge in the working group.

“AI can bring revolution in many streams of mining like mineral exploration, haulage, planning and logistics, safety and maintenance,” Babaei said. “I hope we will be able to promote better understanding of AI within the industry and open doors for collaboration between operators, subject matter experts, academia and other innovators.”

According to GMG, the AI working group has already seen strong levels of engagement.

With Babaei based in British Columbia and O’Brien in Australia, the working group will have “global representation” to “reflect both how globally relevant AI is and how rapidly the field is changing,” O’Brien said in a statement.
