Better known for its development of underground-ready drones, SafeSight, alongside collaborator Redpath Canada Limited, has released the MRC Rail Runner: an autonomous raise inspection robot for underground mines. The robot, installed on a mechanized raise climber (MRC), climbs the raise and takes photos and high-definition video, as well as a complete LIDAR survey, and can be controlled from a laptop or tablet. According to SafeSight president Mike Campigotto, the MRC Rail Runner is designed to make raise inspection as simple as possible. “You don’t need a pilot, the operators can simply clip the runner onto the rail and totally control it from their tablet,” Campigotto said in an interview. “Do a video, do a scan, do images and then unclip it when it’s done.” The MRC Rail Runner is designed to be able to perform inspections immediately after a blast to minimize work delays.
