Different approaches can be used to optimize the control performance in mineral processing. Model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic control (FLC) and expert systems are words that easily come to mind when discussing this topic. However, even if these techniques can lead to significant performance improvement, advanced regulatory control can lead to better ROI with lower initial cost while preparing the path toward advanced control if performance needs to be further improved.

ARC can be described as a combination of standard PID controllers that are coordinated to perform complex control tasks. PID is the most common type of controller and is well known by technical personnel in plants.  It is also easy to adjust and maintain when compare to MPC or FLC. Initial cost of developing ARC is very low because PID and other functions required for implementation are standard in control systems that already exist in plants.

ARC will coordinate PID operation to take action on terminal elements such as valves, variable speed pumps or feeders. When implemented properly, it will also serve as a perfect foundation for future implementation of advanced control like MPC or FLC (advanced control will manipulate dynamically the set points of regulatory controller).

This presentation will demonstrate how ARC can be used to improve throughput in a comminution circuit and reduce the usage of cyanide and lime in a CIP circuit. A case study from a gold operation will be used to demonstrate the benefits from ARC and explain the path to advanced control.
