A fire at Nemaska Lithium’s Nemiscau, Quebec worksite caused major damage to the cafeteria on Wednesday night.

No workers were harmed by the blaze, and 167 workers were sent home.

“All the workers who were sleeping nearby the cafeteria have been rapidly evacuated and nobody was injured,” said Fanny-Ève Tapp, a spokesperson for Nemaska.

The cafeteria was used by the local Cree community as well as construction workers who are working on Nemaska’s Whabouchi lithium project, which is located 15 kilometres away.

Nemaska said construction at Whabouchi, which was halted in the wake of the fire, will resume on Feb. 5. An alternate cafeteria one kilometre away from the camp’s lodging facility will be made available to Nemaska workers until mid-March, when the camp is expected to reopen.

“We are very grateful for the rapid action of our local partners, who will be lending us the cafeteria of their nearby facility. Thanks to their responsiveness, we will be able to quickly get back to constructing the mine with minimal to no delays,” said Guy Bourassa, president and CEO of Nemaska.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

According to the CBC, the fire also destroyed a small convenience store.
