Over the last 30 years, HPGR technology has been used in an increasingly broad range of mineral processing applications where materials have a relatively low moisture content.

Through the use of air classification, however, HPGRs can also grind dry material, a practice widely used in the cement and limestone industries. Mineral processing plants are now starting to take advantage of this capability to meet process requirements or operate sustainably in areas where water is scarce. For example, FMG in Australia piloted HPGR with air classification for their Iron Bridge project and are now rolling out their full plant with a multi-stage HPGR circuit utilizing air classification with a total of 12 HPGRs.

Besides the obvious advantages of low energy consumption and no water consumption, dry grinding can help other separation processes and improve mineral beneficiation.

Moreover, dry grinding by HPGR prevents oxidization of particle surfaces and introduces less grinding media contamination into the process compared to conventional grinding, which in turn enhances mineral recovery. In a market where many believe “water is the new oil,” utilizing HPGR and dry classification technology can go a long way to future-proofing your grinding circuit.

Tim Lundquist graduated from University of Minnesota, Duluth and has worked for Weir Minerals since 2010 as a designer, project engineer and product manager covering a variety of mineral processing equipment. He has worked exclusively with high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology since 2013 and had the opportunity to develop and support many HPGR projects from pre-feasibility through to installation and long-term service. Tim currently resides in northern Wisconsin, USA.

Bjorn Dierx lives in Perth, Australia where he started with Weir Minerals in 2011. He has held many roles from mechanical engineer through to product manager focused on high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology. He has a diverse background of mining industry experience and projects portfolio from across the globe. Primarily focusing on comminution innovation & optimization, Bjorn has been a critical factor in the development of many HPGR applications in recent years.
