There have always been compelling reasons for remote, off-grid mines to reduce fossil fuel consumption to power their operations. Mainly, the complex supply chains and sky-high costs required each year to haul millions of litres of diesel to sites, some only accessible by ice road in winter, or through brief, unpredictable shipping windows in fall.
