The Mount Polley mine tailings dam breach in 2014 released 25 million cubic metres of water, tailings slurry and dam material into the surrounding area. The torrent uprooted trees and washed out nearby waterways and wildlife habitats, leaving behind a muddy, debris-strewn wasteland.
