In the year since Wes Jickling was named chief executive of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), the oil sands industry has experienced a tumultuous time. Major projects have hit hurdles, an already sagging oil price was dragged down even further by the COVID-19 pandemic and a number of institutional investors have said they will no longer invest in oil sands companies.
