When Michel Gamache enrolled in the mining engineering program at Polytechnique Montréal in the early 1980s, he had no experience in the industry aside from a vague interest in geology. Now, years after graduating with his undergraduate degree, and a PhD in optimization and mathematics to boot, Gamache is part of a wave of people in academia and industry looking to reimagine mining operations using artificial intelligence (AI).
